Abstract

Bacteria produce metallophores to capture metals from their environment to use cofactors in enzymes that perform important metabolic functions. Opine metallophores are made by the nicotinamine synthase and opine dehydrogenase enzymes. Opine metallophores provide pathogens with an advantage because they allow bacteria to infect host tissues by evading the hosts nutritional immunity.
